Designing for Privacy in Kuwait

Privacy can be an organising architectural principle, not an afterthought added at the façade.

Privacy as an organising idea

In many Kuwaiti homes, privacy is not simply achieved by closing a window. It is shaped by the arrangement of entrances, gathering spaces, courtyards, views and daily routines. The plan establishes how those relationships work before the elevation gives them expression.

Designing inward

An internal court can introduce daylight and landscape without relying on exposed perimeter glazing. By turning rooms towards a shared private open space, architecture can hold openness and discretion together. The shape of the courtyard, its orientation and its shading determine whether this strategy is comfortable.

A gradient from public to private

A well-considered home typically has more than one threshold. Arrival, guest reception, shared family living and private rooms can be linked through a clear spatial gradient. This avoids treating privacy as an isolated technical requirement and makes it part of the experience of the home.
